The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery (WCPCCS) will be held in Washington DC, USA, from Saturday, 26 August, 2023 to Friday, 1 September, 2023, inclusive. The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery will be the largest and most comprehensive scientific meeting dedicated to paediatric and congenital cardiac care ever held. At the time of the writing of this manuscript, The Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery has 5,037 registered attendees (and rising) from 117 countries, a truly diverse and international faculty of over 925 individuals from 89 countries, over 2,000 individual abstracts and poster presenters from 101 countries, and a Best Abstract Competition featuring 153 oral abstracts from 34 countries. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the activities related to global health and advocacy that will occur at the Eighth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery.
Acknowledging the need for urgent change, we wanted to take the opportunity to bring a common voice to the global community and issue the Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action on Addressing the Global Burden of Pediatric and Congenital Heart Diseases. A copy of this Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action is provided in the Appendix of this manuscript. This Washington DC WCPCCS Call to Action is an initiative aimed at increasing awareness of the global burden, promoting the development of sustainable care systems, and improving access to high quality and equitable healthcare for children with heart disease as well as adults with congenital heart disease worldwide.
The sensitivity of Cook Glacier, East Antarctica, to changes in ice-shelf extent and grounding-line position

The Wilkes Subglacial Basin in East Antarctica contains ice equivalent to 3–4 m of global mean sea level rise and is primarily drained by Cook Glacier. Of concern is that recent observations (since the 1970s) show an acceleration in ice speed over the grounding line of both the Eastern and Western portions of Cook Glacier. Here, we use a numerical ice-flow model (Úa) to simulate the instantaneous effects of observed changes at the terminus of Cook Glacier in order to understand the link between these changes and recently observed ice acceleration. Simulations suggest that the acceleration of Cook West was caused by a retreat in calving-front position in the 1970s, potentially enhanced by grounding-line retreat, while acceleration of Cook East was likely caused by ice-shelf thinning and grounding-line retreat in the mid-1990s. Moreover, we show that the instantaneous ice discharge at Cook East would increase by up to 85% if the whole ice shelf is removed and it ungrounds from a pinning point; and that the discharge at Cook West could increase by ~300% if its grounding line retreated by 10 km.

One of the main capabilities of atom probe tomography (APT) is the ability to not only identify but also characterize early stages of precipitation at length scales that are not achievable by other techniques. One of the most popular methods to identify nanoscale clustering in APT data, based on the density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN), is used extensively in many branches of research. However, it is common that not all of the steps leading to the selection of certain parameters used in the analysis are reported. Without knowing the rationale behind parameter selection, it may be difficult to compare cluster parameters obtained by different researchers. In this work, a simple open-source tool, PosgenPy, is used to justify cluster search parameter selection via providing a systematic sweep through parameter values with multiple randomizations to minimize a false-positive cluster ratio. The tool is applied to several different microstructures: a simulated material system and two experimental datasets from a low-alloy steel . The analyses show how values for the various parameters can be selected to ensure that the calculated cluster number density and cluster composition are accurate.

The local electrode atom probe (LEAP) has become the primary instrument used for atom probe tomography measurements. Recent advances in detector and laser design, together with updated hit detection algorithms, have been incorporated into the latest LEAP 5000 instrument, but the implications of these changes on measurements, particularly the size and chemistry of small clusters and elemental segregations, have not been explored. In this study, we compare data sets from a variety of materials with small-scale chemical heterogeneity using both a LEAP 3000 instrument with 37% detector efficiency and a 532-nm green laser and a new LEAP 5000 instrument with a manufacturer estimated increase to 52% detector efficiency, and a 355-nm ultraviolet laser. In general, it was found that the number of atoms within small clusters or surface segregation increased in the LEAP 5000, as would be expected by the reported increase in detector efficiency from the LEAP 3000 architecture, but subtle differences in chemistry were observed which are attributed to changes in the way multiple hit detection is calculated using the LEAP 5000.

We are finally entering an era where radial velocity and direct imaging parameter spaces are starting to overlap. Radial velocity measurements provide us with a minimum mass for an orbiting companion (the mass as a function of the inclination of the system). By following up these long period radial velocity detections with direct imaging we can determine whether a trend seen is due to an orbiting planet at low inclination or an orbiting brown dwarf at high inclination. In the event of a non-detection we are still able to put a limit on the maximum mass of the orbiting body. The Anglo-Australian Planet Search is one of the longest baseline radial velocity planet searches in existence, amongst its targets are many that show long period trends in the data. Here we present our direct imaging survey of these objects with our results to date. ADI Observations have been made using NICI (Near Infrared Coronagraphic Imager) on Gemini South and analysed using an in house, LOCI-like, post processing.

Paramedic Electrocardiogram and Rhythm Identification: A Convenient Training Device

Introduction: A common reason for utilizing local paramedics and the emergency medical services is for the recognition and immediate treatment of chest pain, a complaint that has multiple possible etiologies. While many of those complaining of disease processes responsible for chest pain are benign, some will be life-threatening and will require immediate identification and treatment. The ability of paramedics to not only perform field electrocardiograms (ECGs), but to accurately diagnose various unstable cardiac rhythms has shown significant reduction in time to specific treatments. Increasing the overall accuracy of ECG interpretation by paramedics has the potential to facilitate early and appropriate treatment and decrease patient morbidity and mortality.
Methods: A convenient training device (flip book) on ambulances and in common areas in the fire station could improve field interpretation of certain cardiac rhythms. This training device consists of illustrated sample ECG tracings and their associated diagnostic criteria. The goal was to enhance the recognition and interpretation of ECGs, and thereby, reduce delays in the initiation of treatment and potential complications associated with misinterpretation.
This study was a prospective, observational study using a matched pre-test/post-test design. The study period was from November 2008 to December 2008. A total of 136 paramedics were approached to participate in this study. A pre-test consisting of 15 12-lead ECGs was given to all paramedics who agreed to participate in the study. Once the pre-tests were completed, the flip books were placed in common areas. Approximately one month after the flip books were made available to the paramedics, a post-test was administered.
Statistical comparisons were made between the pre- and post-test scores for both the global test and each type of rhythm.
Results: Using these data, there were no statistically significant improvements in the global ECG interpretation or on individual rhythm interpretations.
Conclusions: A flip book with multiple ECG rhythms and definitions without the benefit of any outside support was not effective in improving paramedic identification of ECG rhythms on a post-test. Suggestions for further research include repeating the study with a larger sample size; utilizing a lecturer to explain how to use the flip book in the most efficient manner; reiterating how to read and interpret ECGs; and answering questions. Comparing test scores of paramedic students, and newly certified paramedics as opposed to veteran paramedics also may indicate that the flip books are more suited for one group over another.

Recent results of pulmonary arterial angioplasty: the differences between proximal and distal lesions

Introduction: We sought to establish a modern understanding of the safety and efficacy of trans-catheter pulmonary arterial angioplasty. Methods: A review of records in a sample of 104 dilations, out of a total of 711 procedures undertaken between January, 1996 and December, 2000, provided descriptive information regarding technique, adverse events, and changes achieved in luminal diameter. Because evidence during the review of angiograms suggested substantial differences according to whether the stenotic lesions were positioned proximally or distally within the pulmonary arterial tree, all analyses incorporated this classification. Results: We reviewed stenoses in 203 pulmonary arteries, 38% located proximally and 62% distally, with follow-up available concerning dilation in 92 vessels. Proximal dilations frequently involved a prior surgical site, and appeared more compliant and amenable to conventional angioplasty, as evidenced by more common elimination of the waist, but also more recoil, then requiring placement of stents. In contrast, distal lesions frequently required balloons capable of sustaining high pressures of inflation, and larger balloons relative to the size of the vessels. The proportional increase in diameter was greater for distal sites, at 90 plus or minus 77%, compared to proximal, at 64 plus or minus 70%, p equal to 0.002. Serious adverse events occurred in 3 of 104 procedures, giving a rate of serious adverse events of 2.9%. At follow-up, 9 of 92 vessels (10%), 95% confidence intervals from 5% to 18%, returned to their diameters prior to dilation, with no difference in the rate of restenosis according to the site of dilation. Conclusion: Our findings indicate the need to distinguish, and to consider, the important differences in technical issues and outcomes, when performing dilations at proximal as opposed to distal sites. Although angioplasty is effective therapy for pulmonary arterial stenosis, a subset of vessels, more often distal, remain resistant to conventional techniques.
Follow-up results of Cutting Balloon angioplasty used to relieve stenoses in small pulmonary arteries

Background: We sought to determine if the acute gains in pulmonary arterial diameter achieved by using Cutting Balloons to dilate stenoses in small arteries are maintained at follow-up. Methods: A search of our database identified all patients who underwent dilation with Cutting Balloons for pulmonary arterial stenosis between June 2001 and September 2003. We reviewed the procedural and angiographic data obtained at the initial and follow-up procedures. Results: Over the period of study, 29 patients with a median age of 3.7 years, and a range from 0.4 to 46.6, underwent treatment with Cutting Balloons at 41 procedures for one or more pulmonary arterial obstructions resistant to conventional angioplasty. At the initial procedure, we enlarged 79 vessels, with an initial minimal luminal diameter of 1.5 plus or minus 0.8 millimetres, to a diameter of 3.0 plus or minus 1.1 millimetres (p smaller than 0.001). Angiographic data indicated that 49% of the vessels showed evidence of vascular damage not requiring intervention, while stents were placed in 9 vessels. Follow-up angiography was available for 39 of the vessels, evaluated at a median of 6 months, with a range from 3 to 24 months, after the initial procedure. In these vessels, there was a mean loss of 10 plus or minus 25% in luminal diameter, p not significant. Of the 39 vessels, 8 had returned to a diameter within half of the initial diameter, giving a failure rate at follow-up of 21%, with 95% confidence intervals from 9% to 36%. All complications were identified within 24 hours of the catheterization procedure, and there were no late complications or deaths during the period of follow-up. Placement of stents produced both greater increases in diameter at the initial procedure (p smaller than 0.001), and greater losses at follow-up (p equal to 0.01). Conclusions: Despite the frequent identification of intravascular trauma, initial gains in luminal diameter after use of Cutting Balloons to dilate stenotic pulmonary arteries are maintained at follow-up.

The spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are being used to construct a catalogue of QSO absorption lines, for use in studies of abundances, relevant radiation fields, number counts as a function of redshift, and other matters, including the evolution of these parameters. The catalogue includes intervening, associated, and BAL absorbers, in order to allow a clearer definition of the relationships between these three classes. We describe the motivation for and the data products of the project to build the SDSS QSO absorption line catalogue.
Effects of Pre-Process Temperature Stressing on AlGaN/GaN HEMT Structures

In an effort to investigate the stability of the surface and hetero-interface of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs during high temperature device processing steps, AlGaN/GaN HEMT samples were subjected to temperatures from 650°C to 1150°C for a period of 30 seconds prior to processing. Hall and photoluminescence measurements were performed on samples before and after temperature stressing. The samples annealed at 700°C and 1150°C were then processed, and electrical parametric data were collected during and after processing. Large increases in HEMT Schottky gate diode reverse leakage current are observed at higher pre-process annealing temperatures, while the low-field mobility decreases.
